Learning how to draw a house is wonderful because it uses basic shapes. By putting squares and triangles together, you can build a whole picture easily.

How to Draw a House Step by Step

Draw the main box
The first step in how to draw a house is making a big box shape. Draw a large square right in the middle of your paper. This will be the main part of your building where the doors and windows will go later.
Tip: Draw lightly so you can erase mistakes.

Add the upper ledge
Next, let us start making the top part. Draw a long flat horizontal line right above the square you just made. Make this line a little bit wider than the square, so it hangs over the edges just a tiny bit on both sides.
Tip: Use a ruler if you want a perfectly straight line.

Draw the triangle top
Now, draw a big triangle sitting directly on top of that flat line. Draw two diagonal lines that go up and meet in the middle at a point. This makes the tall top of the building to keep the rain outside.
Tip: Try to put the point directly above the middle of the square.

Draw the front door
Let us give the building a way to get inside. Draw a tall rectangle touching the bottom edge of your big square. You can put it right in the middle or slightly off to one side. This shape makes the front door.
Tip: Make the door tall enough for a person to walk through.

Add door details
Your door needs a handle so people can open it! Draw a tiny little circle on one side of the door. You can also draw a small square at the top of the door to make a little glass window.
Tip: Keep the handle small and simple.

Draw the left window
It is time to add some big windows. Draw a square on the left side of your big box, above the ground level. Make sure it is big enough to let lots of warm sunshine inside your new building.
Tip: Leave some space between the door and the window.

Draw the right window
Now, draw another square on the right side of the door. Try to make it the exact same size as the left window. It is perfectly okay if they are not perfectly matched, drawing should just be fun and relaxing!
Tip: Look at the first window to match the size.

Add the window panes
Let us make those squares look like real glass panes. Draw a straight line down the middle of each window, and another line straight across. This makes a clean plus sign shape inside each window frame.
Tip: Draw these inner lines very lightly.

Draw the chimney
Next, let us add a chimney at the top! Draw a tall, skinny rectangle sitting on the side of your large triangle. Make sure the top of the chimney is completely flat. This gives a cozy detail to your picture.
Tip: The chimney should point straight up.

Add the front steps
To make the entrance look extra welcoming, draw two small, thin rectangles right below the front door. Make the bottom rectangle slightly wider than the top one. These will be the lovely front steps to walk up to the door.
Tip: Make the steps line up perfectly with the door.

Draw simple bushes
Let us add some plants to make the yard look nice and green. Draw a bumpy, cloudy shape on each side of the front steps. These puffy shapes make cute little bushes growing perfectly next to your building.
Tip: Use round, soft lines for the bushes.

Finished drawing
Add simple color
Now it is time to color your finished drawing! Now you know how to draw a house! Use a bright color for the walls, a dark color for the top, and green for the bushes. Keep the colors simple and have fun!
