Why Learning How to Draw a Turtle is Fun
By breaking the drawing down into basic parts like a half-circle shell and chunky legs, anyone can create great art. You will practice connecting simple lines to build a full character quickly and easily.

How to Draw a Turtle Step by Step
- 1Step 1 of 9
Draw the turtle shell

We will begin learning how to draw a turtle by making the top of the shell. Draw a big, wide half-circle right in the middle of your paper. This smooth bump looks just like a hill and will be the main part of your drawing.
Tip: Draw lightly so you can easily fix any mistakes.
- 2Step 2 of 9
Finish the shell base

Now, close the bottom of the shell. Draw a long, slightly curved horizontal line connecting the two ends of the half-circle you just made. This gives your turtle a solid shell to hide inside. It should look like a sideways bowl.
Tip: It is okay if the bottom line is not perfectly straight.
- 3Step 3 of 9
Add the head

Let us give our animal a head! On the right side of the shell, draw a sideways U-shape pointing outward. Make it thick enough so your turtle looks friendly and ready to explore. This simple curved line makes drawing very easy.
Tip: Make the head round and smooth, not pointy.
- 4Step 4 of 9
Draw the eye and mouth

Inside the head you just drew, place a tiny dark circle for the eye. Right below the eye, add a short curved line for a happy smile. Giving your turtle a happy face makes the drawing much more fun and inviting.
Tip: Place the eye near the top edge of the head.
- 5Step 5 of 9
Draw the front legs

Next, we will add the front legs so our friend can walk. Draw two thick, rounded shapes at the bottom right side of the shell, just behind the head. One leg can be slightly behind the other for a neat look.
Tip: Think of the legs as chunky little rectangles with soft corners.
- 6Step 6 of 9
Draw the back legs

Move over to the left side of the shell to add the back legs. Draw two more rounded shapes pointing down, just like the front legs. Now your drawing has all four legs standing firmly on the ground!
Tip: Keep the back legs the same size as the front legs.
- 7Step 7 of 9
Add a little tail

Every turtle needs a tail. On the far left side of the shell, right above the back legs, draw a tiny triangle pointing outward. Make the tip slightly rounded so it looks friendly and soft. Now the body is totally complete.
Tip: Keep the tail very short compared to the legs.
- 8Step 8 of 9
Decorate the shell

Let us add a neat pattern to the shell. Draw a few simple shapes inside the big half-circle. You can draw squares, hexagons, or straight lines across the top. This neat detail makes learning how to draw a turtle look super cool!
Tip: Space the shapes out evenly over the shell.

Add simple color

It is time to finish by coloring! Use a bright green for the head, legs, and tail. Color the shell a nice warm brown or dark green. You have successfully learned how to draw a cute turtle all by yourself!
Tip: Color in one direction to keep your picture neat.
